The town of Unity voted Friday to accept a popular park from Unity Environmental University.
The vote came at a special Select Board meeting.
In a statement, Unity Environmental University said that it has supported the town by providing access to the park for years and the gift “guarantees public ownership and access for generations to come.”
In recent months, some Unity residents have complained that the 27-acre Field of Dreams park, which has sports fields, a tennis court, a playground and shorefront on Unity Pond, had fallen into disrepair.
The park was created in the 1990s and later taken over by the university, formerly known as Unity College, which announced last month that it had sold its Unity campus for $6 million. The identity of the buyer has not been disclosed, but the university has said the new owner will convert the campus into an “upscale summer camp.”
Unity Environmental University moved its campus to Pineland Farms in New Gloucester and now serves about 10,000 students nationwide, through in-person and online classes.
