Lightning is the suspected culprit behind twin fires at a Litchfield home Thursday evening.
The fires broke out inside the Hallowell Road home, where the family inside safely escaped and called 911, according to Maj. Aaron Turcotte, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Firefighters quickly put out the blazes.
Investigators believe that the fires are related to a severe thunderstorm that swept through the area and possibly a lightning strike. Turcotte said Friday morning that investigators are reviewing lightning strike data for confirmation.
He said that lightning can travel through a home’s electrical, conductive and plumbing systems, leading to fires.
