What would it take to make Maine a better place for kids? The Bangor Daily News has launched a reporting project to find out. Credit: Leela Stockley / BDN Composite; Kim Higgins / BDN

The Bangor Daily News is launching a new reporting project that aims to answer a big question facing the state: What can Maine do to be a better place for kids?

Our reporting is starting with education, an area where Maine has lost the most ground over the last several years. We used to be one of the best states for students but now we rank among the worst. Our journalists will probe why, and identify solutions.

We see Maine’s education freefall, and the lack of a consensus on how to fix it, as an entry point into a larger project around how Maine kids are doing, and what they need.

The lives of Maine kids matter to the future of the nation’s oldest state. From education and child welfare to high school sports and mental health, the BDN’s local journalists can make connections.
