Although Sen. Susan Collins earlier this month voted against Todd Blanche’s confirmation as U.S. attorney general (yet another in a long line of what I see as her meaningless protest votes) because, in part, he issued an order in May granting President Donald Trump, his sons, and family business immunity from IRS audits, she has not made any meaningful public attempt since this order was first announced to ensure the rules that apply to all of us who pay our taxes year after year also apply to Trump, or any other president, member of Congress or Supreme Court justice for that matter. I wrote to Collins soon after this sweetheart deal was first announced asking her to take action to block this sweetheart deal. I consider her response to be non-committal.
I believe citizens of Maine deserve a senator who will stand up against Trump’s abuses of office, which include the order granting him immunity from IRS audits.
Maine voters have a choice this November. We can reelect a senator who didn’t appear immediately alarmed when Trump was granted immunity from IRS audits, or we can elect a senator who I believe will stand up for all of us.
The choice is easy for me. I will be voting for Troy Jackson.
