The Maine U.S. Senate race is a study in contrasts. It pits a woman who fought the Senate boys club to become head of the Appropriations Committee against a candidate who will likely have no power in the Senate. A thorn in President Donald Trump’s side against a candidate who pivots (on abortion, gay rights, party affiliation, support for Graham Platner, Socialism, etc.) seemingly to win elections. A scandal-free workhorse against a candidate whose scandals are gradually coming to light.
Yes, Susan Collins sides with the Republicans the majority of the time, just as Sen. Angus King does with the Democrats. But I think that’s all to Maine’s benefit: no matter who sits in the White House or what party controls Congress, we’ve got an experienced, respected, bipartisan senator to advocate for us. Let’s keep it that way.
