A cat died in an early Sunday morning house fire in Windham.

The fire broke out about 3:22 a.m. at the Kaitlyn Court home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the roof, Moss said Monday evening.

The five people inside, along with two dogs, escaped the blaze without injury. One person was taken to the hospital for an “unrelated medical issue,” Moss said.

A cat perished in the flames.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire.

Investigators believe an electrical failure at a wall outlet, where an air conditioner was plugged in, caused the fire.

The fire was ruled accidental.
