A small airplane ended up alongside Youngtown Road in Lincolnville on Monday, leaving the pilot unharmed and the plane without obvious damage.
The single-engine aircraft, a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, according to Federal Aviation Administration registration records, had its nose in the bushes a few yards off the south side of Youngtown Road, near the culvert over Hardy Brook.
A man walking near the plane who identified himself as the pilot said he was unharmed and the plane was OK. Another man at the scene objected to the Midcoast Villager’s presence and encouraged the pilot, by name, not to speak to the press before consulting an attorney.
The man demanded to know why the Villager was there — a Youngtown resident had contacted the newspaper to say the plane was seen coming down— and used an obscene hand gesture and language to make it clear he did not want a reporter there.
It was unclear how the plane ended up where it did, including whether it had landed on the road, in the large grassy field just across the road.
Police, firefighters and other emergency responders were not at the scene during the time the Villager was there around 11:30 a.m. Multiple motorists slowed to inquire about the pilot, take pictures and offer help, but the man told them that everybody who needed to be called had already been called and encouraged them to move along.
