MACHIAS — A multimedia exhibition by East Machias artist Alison Brynn Ross will open Thursday, Sept. 10 at the University of Maine at Machias Powers Hall Gallery.
“Kindred Occult”, on display through Nov. 4, features work in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, ceramics and metal. The exhibition explores how animals, plants and everyday scenes have, through centuries of superstition and cultural traditions, become associated with ideas of evil and malevolence.
Ross describes the collection as an exploration of those enduring associations and of humanity’s changing relationship with the natural world.
An opening reception will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. The Powers Hall Gallery is open 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Ross is a self-taught artist who lives in East Machias with her husband and fellow artist Dave Ross. Her work spans ceramic, metal, painting and fiber and frequently draws inspiration from nature. She is president of Eastport Gallery and has worked with arts, local government and community organizations across the country to teach and support the arts.
