A Brunswick man has been charged with murder and criminal use of explosives in connection with the fatal shooting of his neighbor earlier this month.

The Brunswick Police Department received a 911 call at 5 Valerie Ave. reporting gunshots shortly before 1 a.m. on Sept. 1.

Officers found a deceased man on the property, identified by state police on Friday as ​​48-year-old James Smith of Brunswick. The state medical examiner determined that Smith died of a gunshot wound. His death was ruled homicide.

On the night of the shooting, police arrested the resident of 5 Valerie Ave, identified on Friday as 58-year-old Keith Brunelle, on a bail violation. He was released after posting bail.

After an investigation, state police detectives got an arrest warrant for Brunelle. They arrested him on Friday morning at a residence in Augusta, reportedly without incident.

Brunelle was charged with murder and criminal use of explosives. He is being held at Cumberland County Jail without bail, according to state police.
