Teams who met in the playoffs a year ago will square off in regular season contests this weekend on the high school football schedule.
On Friday night, Winslow and John Bapst will square off at the Winkin Sports Complex in Bangor at 7:30 p.m., and Hermon and Nokomis will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in Newport.
Winslow and John Bapst met in the Class D North championship game a year ago with Winslow earning a 42-14 victory before losing to Winthrop in the state title game 41-14.
Both will be looking for their first wins of the season after suffering close road losses a week ago. Winslow lost to Wells, 14-13, while John Bapst was beaten by Madison, 46-40.
Hermon beat Nokomis 30-6 in a Class C quarterfinal and opened the season with a 24-0 victory over Foxcroft Academy.
Sam Hopkins scored on touchdown runs of 80 and 20 yards, Ethan Curtis threw a 38-yard TD pass to Griffin Dunton and Ethan Garner kicked a 25-yard field goal.
Foxcroft failed to score on two drives that took the Ponies to Hermon’s one and three-yard lines.
Gardiner dealt Nokomis a 37-6 setback a week ago in a mutual season-opener.
Foxcroft will play its home opener at 7 p.m. Friday against an Oceanside/North Haven team that began its campaign with a 50-12 triumph over Hampden Academy.
Bangor High School’s Rams will travel to Lewiston for a 7 p.m. Friday game.
Bangor will be seeking its first victory after a 22-18 loss to Massabesic of Waterboro a week ago. The Rams had the ball at the Massabesic-1 with under three minutes remaining but couldn’t convert.
Lewiston, winless a year ago, dropped its opener to Portland, 40-14.
Local rivals Hampden Academy and Brewer will collide at Doyle Field at 7 p.m. Friday.
Brewer dropped its opener at Belfast, 28-26. Hampden was winless last season, and Brewer was 2-6.
Mount Desert Island, a semifinalist in 8-man Large North football a year ago, will entertain Old Town at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Old Town played 11-man football a year ago but has dropped down to 8-man Large and beat rival Orono 48-6 a week ago while MDI beat Mt. Ararat of Topsham, 25-7.
