BREWER — AARP Maine was honored with the 2026 Helper of the Year Award by the Eastern Area Agency on Aging at the Harvest for Help Breakfast on Sept. 17 in Brewer.
Each year, EAAA recognizes individuals and organizations that go “above and beyond” in supporting its mission through advocacy, volunteerism, financial contributions and partnership. EAAA serves older adults, caregivers, and adults with disabilities in Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Washington counties.
The award recognizes AARP Maine’s advocacy in support of the Older Mainers Act (LD 814), which secured a significant increase in state funding for Maine’s five Area Agencies on Aging.
“AARP Maine has consistently been an outstanding champion for Area Agencies on Aging across the state,” Tabatha Caso, executive director of EAAA, said. “We’re especially grateful for the support AARP has shown Eastern Area Agency on Aging over the years. Their commitment to improving the lives of older Mainers makes AARP an incredibly deserving recipient.”
AARP Maine State Director Noël Bonam and Associate State Director for Advocacy and Outreach Alf Anderson accepted the award at the breakfast, joined by AARP volunteers from the Bangor area who support local outreach efforts and community events.
“It is a privilege to be recognized by the Eastern Area Agency on Aging as the 2026 Helper of the Year,” Bonam said. “We share this honor with our volunteers, whose commitment to serving others strengthens communities across Maine. We thank EAAA for its partnership and inspiring leadership. AARP is in your corner, and we are proud to work alongside organizations like EAAA to support older Mainers and their families.”
The Harvest for Help Breakfast was held for the fourth year in 2026. This year’s event focused on the role of family caregivers and caregiving resources, featuring an expert panel discussion and recognition awards for individuals and organizations making a difference in the community.
