The other day, I read that a national poll showed Susan Collins with a 3-point lead over Troy Jackson. One of the things that many independents and even Democrats seemed to agree on was that Susan brings home the bacon: money, grants, and government contracts that are helpful to Maine businesses and people.
I guess that is true, but a bigger question for me is: “What is the real cost to Maine people and all of our American democracy if Susan Collins supports this president 95% of the time in order to get us that bacon?” I don’t want to let our need for federal money turn into a greed that rivals the greediness of this president and which is destroying the very democratic structures that made us a great country with enough wealth, not just for the lucky rich, but to share with middle-class workers, to share with people who can’t work, and to share with people who need a hand.
I believe Troy Jackson, Susan’s poorer Aroostook County compatriot, embodies the ideals that made America a great place to live, ideals that Susan seems somehow to have lost in her extended Senate career.
