An Amity man remains free on $2,500 cash bail after being charged with multiple child sexual assault counts.
Kevin Ledger, 39, was arrested and charged on Sept. 29 by Maine State Police with three felonies and two misdemeanors for sexually related acts against two young girls on Sept. 5 in Aroostook County.
In the first felony count, Ledger was charged with attempted gross sexual assault, a Class A felony. Police said Ledger engaged in conduct that “in fact constituted a substantial step toward its commission and did attempt to engage in a sexual act with an 8-year-old child.”
Because it was an attempt of a Class A crime, Ledger was charged with a Class B felony for the alleged act.
In count two, Ledger allegedly attempted unlawful sexual contact, a Class C crime, by attempting to engage in a sex act with a 9-year-old child, according to court records.
The third count against Ledger – exposing his genitals to a 9-year-old child and making the child expose her genitals to him with the purpose of gratifying a sexual desire, is a Class C crime.
Unlawful sexual touching and assault, recklessly causing bodily injury, both misdemeanors, were committed against an 8-year-old child, police said in the arrest affidavit.
If convicted, Ledger faces up to 22 years in prison and $34,000 in fines.
In Maine, Class B crimes carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $20,000, Class C crimes carry a maximum penalty of up to 5 years in prison and a fine up to $5,000, and Class D crimes are misdemeanors carrying a maximum penalty of up to 364 days in jail and a fine up to $2,000.
The conditions of Ledger’s release prohibit direct or indirect contact with the two children and an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
His first hearing is slated in Aroostook County Court in Houlton at 1 p.m. on Jan. 5 before Judge Rob Langner.
