BANGOR — Mental Illness Awareness Week, observed each year from Oct. 4 through 10, offers communities across Maine and the nation a focused opportunity to educate the public about mental health conditions, challenge stigma and encourage people to seek help without shame.

Mental illness touches nearly every family and community. In Maine, recent data show that roughly one in four adults experiences a mental health condition each year, and the state continues to report among the higher rates of diagnosed depression in the United States — approximately 26% of adults. Suicide rates in Maine also remain elevated compared with the national average. These numbers underscore both the need and the importance of compassionate, accessible care.

Northern Light Acadia Hospital operates under a simple, unified philosophy: “People are doing the best they can with the skills they have. They are not choosing to struggle.” This guiding belief rejects the idea that people with mental health challenges are simply not trying hard enough. Instead, it recognizes that people act with the tools and skills available to them in the moment, and that with the right support, those skills can grow.

“Stigma thrives when we assume struggle is a choice or a character flaw,” Angela Haley, LCPC, clinical director of inpatient services, Northern Light Acadia Hospital, said. “Our philosophy reminds us all that people are already doing their best. Our role is to meet them with dignity, build skills and walk alongside them toward healing. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a perfect time to share that message widely.”

Mental health is health. By educating ourselves, reducing stigma and treating one another with the understanding that people are doing the best they can with the skills they have, Maine can create communities where more people feel safe seeking support and building better days ahead.
