The Bangor man accused of killing a Calais teen more than 40 years ago has been found guilty.

It took the jury only an hour to return a guilty verdict against 67-year-old Raymond Brown on Thursday, according to CBS affiliate WABI.

The trial began Monday.

On Aug. 25, 1984, Brown killed 18-year-old Linda Maxwell, whose naked body was found near a boat landing on the St. Croix River in Robbinston. Brown confessed to a cellmate earlier this year that he had suffocated Maxwell in a bog after she threatened to tell people that he raped her, prosecutors said this week.

He was among a group of people drinking with Maxwell the night of her death, and Brown, who was married at the time, had been seen flirting with her and had told others he wanted to have sex with her, according to prosecutors.

Brown offered to give Maxwell a ride home and later claimed to have dropped her off at a variety store.

Brown, who was living in Pembroke at the time of Maxwell’s death, had  five criminal convictions prior to the slaying, including felony burglary and simple assault. In the mid-1980s, he twice was charged with gross sexual misconduct and also was accused once of rape, according to Bangor Daily News archives.

A gross sexual misconduct charge was dismissed in September 1984 after a grand jury declined to indict Brown. He was found not guilty in July of the same year on the rape allegation. A second gross sexual misconduct case against Brown was dismissed in September 1985.

Maxwell’s death was originally classified as a drowning, but police exhumed her embalmed body in 2024 for a limited autopsy.

Brown was arrested on a murder charge in May 2025 during a traffic stop in Bangor.

He will be sentenced at a later date, WABI reported.

Brown faces 25 years to life in prison.
