Susan Collins gets the 1st tribal endorsement of her career

Nearly 30 years after Susan Collins was first elected to the U.S. Senate, she has received her first ever tribal endorsement.

Chief Pos Bassett wrote a letter of support to the Republican senator on behalf of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik commending her for working “tirelessly to improve the economy of [the tribe] and community of Washington County” for 30 years.

Collins, who is seeking a sixth term, hasn’t supported tribal sovereignty, but she has pushed for federal funding and several projects for the tribes, including $5 million recently secured for a new wastewater facility at the Passmaquoddy tribe’s Pleasant Point reservation.

Bassett expressed gratitude for the senator’s “ability to deliver” — a familiar sentiment among her supporters.

Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson are still meeting with tribal leaders, and more endorsements are likely to come before Election Day.
