Detectives with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Darryl Sanborn Sr. in Waldoboro this past spring.
“The investigation remains active and ongoing,” Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Oct. 15 in response to an inquiry from the Midcoast Villager.
On April 17, a person walking on a dirt road off Wagner Bridge Road in Waldoboro discovered the body of an adult male. The deceased was taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed and confirmed as the 64-year-old Sanborn who lived in Thomaston.
The Maine Department of Public Safety said Sanborn was last seen in Waldoboro in the early hours of April 5. On April 7, the Waldoboro Police Department requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central regarding Sanborn’s disappearance.
The Public Safety office stated there was no known danger to the public. Police said no additional information is being released at this time.
The body was found near the location where a man was held against his will at a Reef Road home for a week. The victim in that case said he was beaten and threatened with death.
Police have not said whether the two cases are connected.
Born in Camden, Sanborn was the son of David and Joan Smith Sanborn. He attended school in Warren as a young child and later moved to Thomaston, where he continued his education and graduated from Georges Valley High School.
He worked for many years for MBNA and then Bank of America, including time at the Rockland, Camden and Belfast branches. He retired from Bank of America in 2012 to co-own and operate Dorman’s Dairy Dream. Throughout his life, he served on the school boards of Pen Bay Christian School and Regional School Unit 13 (elected in 2011), taught Sunday School, and was a deacon at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church. He always spoke with pride about his time in those roles, according to his obituary.
