A man who had allegedly been threatening people at a Calais bar died Saturday after crashing a Corvette.

Robert Boggia of Whiting was reported to police at around 12:26 a.m. after bar customers claimed he had been threatening people with a gun. The customers also said that he had been driving a red Corvette.

A Baileyville police officer then saw the Corvette driving at speeds more than 150 mph, and a Washington County deputy sheriff reportedly saw the vehicle traveling around 100 mph on the Charlotte Road.

When the Washington County sheriff followed the vehicle to investigate, he found that the car had crashed and Boggia had been thrown from the vehicle. The 40-year-old man died at the scene.

In 2018, Boggia was accused of setting fire in January 2013 to a woman’s house in Blue Hill, according to documents filed in Hancock County Unified Criminal Court. He was also accused in Washington County of conspiring in October 2017 to arrange the killing of the woman who owned the home. Those plans were never set in motion.

In addition to arson and conspiring to commit murder, Boggia was also accused of gross sexual assault, aggravated trafficking in drugs, possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, theft, domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing and obstructing the report of a crime.

Most of the charges are connected to alleged crimes that occurred between February 2017 and January of 2018.

An investigation of Boggia’s Saturday crash is ongoing.
