A child is in critical condition after being found in a pool at the Hampton Inn Hotel in Kennebunk.

The 4-year-old girl was not breathing when medical officials were called to the scene at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The child was experiencing cardiac arrest, and Kennebunk Fire Rescue started resuscitation efforts.

The girl was taken to MaineHealth in Biddeford, before being taken to MaineHealth in Portland. She remains in critical condition, according to fire rescue officials.

An investigation is ongoing. Officials are not releasing the child’s name to allow privacy for her family.

Kennebunk Fire Rescue reminds people to ensure that they are actively observing children around bodies of water, and that cellphones can be a distraction when watching children swimming.
