A man allegedly assaulted a Rockland city councilor over the weekend with pepper-spray.

Nicholas Wallace, 37, has been charged with criminal threatening, terrorizing, disorderly conduct, assault and criminal use of disabling chemicals, according to the Rockland Police Department.

Wallace allegedly assaulted Councilor Penny York about 10 a.m. Saturday. York told the Midcoast Villager that she was on a run on Broadway, where she apparently startled Wallace.

She apologized and continued on her run, but Wallace allegedly chased her until she fell where the railroad tracks cross Broadway. There Wallace allegedly stood over her and pepper-sprayed York as she lay on the ground, according to the Villager.

Several people rushed to York’s aid, the Villager reported.

Wallace was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he remained Monday morning, according to Rockland police.

He was expected to appear in court Monday afternoon.
