An Indiana man has been arrested in last week’s Township 22 crash that left a 5-year-old boy dead.
Dion Campbell, 33, of Elkhart, Indiana, faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated driving to endanger, criminal operating under the influence and manslaughter, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Campbell was driving with the 5-year-old and a 10-month-old girl near the intersection of routes 9 and 193 in the unincorporated Hancock County township about 11:26 p.m. Thursday when he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and hit an embankment.
When police arrived at the scene, the boy, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was rapidly deteriorating. He died at the scene despite efforts to save his life, Moss said.
Campbell and the 10-month-old were taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Neither child was properly restrained in the vehicle, according to Moss.
Campbell is the father of both children.
Campbell was arrested Monday night and taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, where he was held without bail ahead of a Wednesday court appearance.
Township 22 is located near the Hancock-Washington county-line near Beddington.
