A 5-year-old boy died from injuries after his father’s car crashed late Thursday night.

The single-vehicle crash was reported shortly before 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 193 in Township 22, an unincorporated area of Hancock County.

At the scene, a state trooper found a 5-year-old boy in the passenger seat whose “condition was rapidly deteriorating,” state police said in a news release. Police attempted life-saving measures but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 33-year-old Dion Campbell of Indiana, and a 10-month-old girl were taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Campbell is the father of both children.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the vehicle didn’t stop at a stop sign at the intersection then hit an embankment. The investigation also determined that neither child was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Route 9 was closed for several hours after the crash.
