I spent almost two decades working in hospitality and regularly met Maine’s high-profile politicians. I observed how they interacted with their constituents, their staff, and how they treated me. Even though I only got a small window into their character, I believe these small interactions stacked up over the years can tell a lot about a person and how they serve Maine.

This letter is not about partisanship, but about character. In my experience, Susan Collins has always been the most approachable and gracious Maine politician. She is willing to engage in conversation with anyone, and I’ve seen her discuss the issues with constituents who strongly disagree with her.

At the end of the day, we should all want a representative who is genuine and will treat each and every Mainer with respect. In my experience, Maine’s moderates are the most approachable. Sen. Collins, former Sen. Olympia Snowe, Sen. Angus King, and Rep. Jared Golden are all good examples of how I think Maine politicians should act.

I will support Collins this fall because she has the integrity to treat her constituents with respect, even in seemingly insignificant moments.
