What is one new policy that the state should embrace to make housing easier to build and afford?
In talking with developers, contractors and Real Estate experts, the overwhelming consensus is that our regulatory and permitting processes are strangling our ability to increase housing at a rate that will alleviate the housing crisis. I’ll be recommending a cross functional workgroup including representatives from all stakeholders to review opportunities to remove red tape to streamline the process.
Transmission lines, solar incentives and offshore wind development have been controversial over the past several years. What steps should Maine take to meet growing demand for electricity?
Maine pays the 6th highest electric rates in the country, which is a huge financial burden to people on fixed incomes and reduces our ability to be competitive in growing new businesses. Maine should encourage the expansion of inexpensive hydro power, while letting the market determine which technologies provide the best and least expensive energy options. Maine should follow California’s lead on reducing subsidies for solar generation.
Should the state make changes to its tax laws? If so, outline your priorities.
The exponential growth in Maine’s tax burden is unsustainable. Senior citizens are being told they should take reverse mortgages on their homes in order to pay their real estate taxes. Reinstating a tax stabilization program to support Seniors staying in their homes would be my first priority, followed by eliminating the solar tax. I also recommend a review and elimination of some of the programs and departments that have been added since the Federal Covid Subsidies started.
We are closing in on the one-year anniversary of the Lewiston mass shooting. Are further legislative responses required around guns, mental health, supporting victims and families or other policy areas?
Maine has continued to underfund mental health. Increasing treatment facilities and counseling services for our most vulnerable population will help keep people suffering from mental health issues safe. Helping Law Enforcement better understand the current Yellow Flag and options they have to remove firearms from homes will help keep the public safe.
Describe a unique attribute or area of focus that you will bring to the Legislature.
I’ve had the opportunity to live the American Dream here in Maine. I grew up on the coast, was the first in my family to go to college at the University of Southern Maine and Husson University. I married my high school sweetheart, have two great kids and worked for some of the finest companies in the world, including Procter & Gamble, Hannaford, Amazon and Ahold/Delhaize. I’ve helped solve complex business issues with diverse teams around the world. I’ll bring these experiences and energy to deliver results for the great people of Maine!
