On Tuesday, March 5, Mainers will have the opportunity to take to the polls to select their choice for presidential candidate for their chosen party.
As of January, Maine has semi-open primaries. The new system allows unenrolled voters to participate in party primaries without formally enrolling as a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green Independent or No Labels, the five official parties in Maine.
The presidential primary will also employ ranked choice voting. Maine’s Republicans have declined to participate in ranked choice tabulation for the March primary.
Instead, Republicans here will use only the first round of voting to allocate delegates even though the public will see later rounds.
Here’s what the ballot will look like this spring.

What about contested candidates?
While Donald Trump’s eligibility for the Republican presidential nomination remains clouded by a series of lawsuits, the former president will appear on Maine’s March 5 ballot.
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has asked Maine’s high court to weigh in on her decision to rule former President Donald Trump ineligible for the primary ballot before the U.S. Supreme Court settles a similar case in Colorado. However, that decision won’t come before the federal court’s ruling. Maine and Colorado are the only two states that have ruled Trump ineligible for the Republican primary.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hold oral arguments Feb. 8 in the Colorado case, which could affect the GOP frontrunner’s ballot status around the country.
