BELFAST, Maine&nbsp- Danya Klie’s garden on Toads End Road will be the Friday, Aug. 15, stop on the Belfast Garden Club’s annual Open Garden Days tour.

Klie’ s vegetable garden is organic and tended by hand. Klie does not like power equipment, nor does she use soil amendments. She grows her own fertilizer — buckwheat cover crops mostly, and tills it in. She draws her water from a well and uses gravity to get it to the garden. There is no pump.

Klie’ s vegetable gardens will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Toads End Road is a dirt road off Kaler Road and she advises guests to drive slowly. Her house is second on the right.

The next garden tour will be on Friday, Aug. 22, when David Cassida, 268 Northport Ave., Belfast, opens his vegetable gardens. All tours this year will be on Fridays. Five more are scheduled. The final tour is Sept. 19.

The garden club suggests a donation of $3. Funds raised benefit the club’ s Belfast Civic Beautification projects. There are a dozen of them including the new garden, “Water-loo,” just created at the public restrooms near the wharf, the gardens at the library, Post Office Square, the police station, City Park and around the chapel at the cemetery.
