NELLIE ‘MEME’ CARNEY MAPLETON – Nellie “Meme” Carney, 73, entered eternal life with her Lord Sept. 6, 2008, at a Presque Isle health care facility. Nellie was born Oct. 28, 1934, in Ashland, daughter of the late Ligiori and Flora (Clark) Cloukey. In 1950, she married Stanley Carney; they raised nine children and they ran Nellie’s Grocery, Ashland, for years. In 1976, they moved to Mapleton, where they spent the rest of their lives together. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and wife. She enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends, also enjoyed knitting and listening to country music. She will be greatly missed by all those she has touched. Nellie is survived by her children, Judy Brown and her husband, Harvey, of Presque Isle, Flora Boucher and her husband, Reno, of Chapman, Shirley Carney of Etna, Carol Kennedy and her husband, Steven, of Chapman, Kevin Carney and his wife, Michele, of Ashland, Kary Carney and his companion, Nikki, of Mapleton, and Kelley Shurley and her husband, John, of Mapleton; two very special daughters-in-law, Carla and Starla Carney, both of Mapleton, 19 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; Aunt Katie of Westfield; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley, in 1986; two sons, Darrell and Kenneth Carney; granddaughter, Alisha Morris; great-granddaughter, Madison Palmer; great-grand-son, Corbin Kennedy; her parents, two brothers and three sisters. Relatives and friends are invited to a supper 6 p.m. Thursday at State Road Advent Christian Church, where a celebration of her life will be held 7:30 p.m. with her grandson, Harvey Brown IV officiating.
