SOUTHWEST HARBOR Samuel G. Dam, 85, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at a Bar Harbor health care facility. Mr. Dam was born July 1, 1923, in Burlington, the son of Paul G. and Myrtle H. (Glidden) Dam. His family moved to Southwest Harbor, where he graduated from Pemetic High School. Mr. Dam volunteered for the U.S. Military and served in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement as a senior master sergeant in 1971. Sgt. Samuel “Sam” Dam was proud to serve and defend his country in three wars: World War II, Korean and Vietnam. Upon retiring in 1971, he and his wife, Betty, returned to their beloved state of Maine and to the town of Southwest Harbor. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 77 and a loyal Mason. He particularly enjoyed attending events and supporting the American Legion. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia J. Azar and husband, George, of Tallahassee, Fla.; sons, Paul A. Dam and wife, Ethel, of Miami and Roger E. Dam and wife, Margie, of Peachtree City, Ga.; granddaughters, Elizabeth Rodriguez and husband, Erick, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lauren Dam of Peachtree City, Ga.; grandson, Paul Roger Dam of Tallahassee, Fla.; stepson, David Desjardin and wife, Nancy; great-granddaughter, Victoria Rodriguez; stepgrandsons, Patrick Azar and Marshall Desjardin; a sister, Rhoda Park; many nieces and nephews. He was also honored with the friendship of Desjardin family members, John and Jean Desjardin and sons, Shawn and Jay; Ann Desjardin and Pete Murphy and children, John, Adam and Carol; and Timothy and Vicky Desjardin and sons, Timothy and Scott. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty J. Dam; his second wife, Eunice Billings Dam; his sister, Annabel Worcester; and his brother, Victor Dam. The family would like to thank everyone for their care and support given to Sam, especially the staff of Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Southwest Harbor Congregational Church with Pastor Blake Brown officiating. Interment will be at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor.
