TREMONT – Harvey M. Sawyer, 90, died Sept. 17, 2008, at his home. He was born June 17, 1918, in Tremont, the son of Henry W. and Freelove (Brewer) Sawyer. He was their fifth child. He graduated from Pemetic High School in 1937. Harvey worked at several different jobs on the island, including working for J.N. Mills Oil Co., for many years, before joining the Coast Guard, where he served as a skipper of a sub chaser. After returning home, he eventually became a lobsterman, which he really enjoyed. He was a member of the K of P, VFW and the American Legion. He attended Head of Harbor Congregational Church and was a past trustee and deacon on the council at the church. Harvey is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Charlotte (Turner) of Tremont; two sons, Harvey Eugene of Tremont and Randal Simmons and his wife, Barbara, of Frenchboro; his grandchildren, Corey Cecil of Bangor, Morgan Fairchild of Aurora, David and Michelle of Thomaston and Christopher Harvey and wife, Emmie, of Frenchboro; and great-grandchildren, Katrina of New York, Gretchen of Aurora, Isaiah and Marilyn of Frenchboro. He was predeceased by brothers, Kenneth E. Sawyer and Lawrence B. Sawyer; and sisters, Ruth Stanley and Frances Young. Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Head of Harbor Congregational Church, Bass Harbor, with the Rev. Wayne Buchanan officiating.
