BANGOR – Alfred J. Keith, 82, of Northport, died April 1, 2005, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor. He was born April 28, 1923, in Bangor, the son of Ballard F. and Frances (Harford) Keith. Alfred served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Al graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1948, and owned Keith Shoe Company in Old Town for a few years before moving to the Village of Bayside in Northport, where for five years he owned the Bayside Store. Al established Keith’s Marine Service, providing a mooring service for the residents of Bayside and lobster fishing for more than 40 years. For several years, Al served as overseer and treasurer of the Northport Village Corporation before becoming village manager. His biggest joy was serving as harbor master for more than 45 years where he met and enjoyed many people from all over the world. Al was generous with his time and energies within the Bayside community and was honored in 2002 at a celebration commemorating his 50 years of service to Bayside, where the wharf is now the “Alfred J. Keith” wharf and a plaque honoring him is mounted on a rock near-by. Alfred was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Edward H. Keith, Esq.; and his sister, Marian K. Saddler. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Alrine (Tankle) Keith of West Chester, Pa.; three stepchildren, Judith E. “Jeb” Bremner of Northport, William F. “Butch” Bremner of Ocala, Fla., and Robert W. “Bob” Bremner of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; several nieces and nephews including Frances Cartier of Orrington, Michael Powers of Boothbay, William Powers of Finger Lakes, N.Y., and Peggy Powers. There will be no funeral service. A celebration of life is being planned for August in Bayside and will be announced.
