ORRINGTON and CAPE ROSIER – Alfred Lewis Black, 61, died unexpectedly Oct. 29, 2006, in Orrington. He was born April 18, 1945, in Castine, son of Lewis and Florene (Cotes) Black of Cape Rosier. He attended one year of high school in Brooksville, then went on to graduate from George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill, in 1963. After graduation, he worked for a year doing carpentry with A.B. Herrick then joined the U.S. Navy and learned the job of postal service in Japan. He worked at St. Regis Paper Co., Bucksport, and the Bucksport Post Office concurrently and eventually worked solely for the postal service, retiring as postmaster. After his retirement, he was a delivery driver for the Bangor Daily News and was most recently employed at Federal Express. He served as third selectman of Brooksville for one year, was past master of Hancock Pamona Grange, a member of the Cape Rosier Grange, the Odd Fellows, and the National Association of Post Masters of the United States. He was the founder of an annual softball tournament in Bucksport to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House, which he was involved with for 10 years. He was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox and the University of Maine Black Bear hockey team. He is survived by his mother, Florene Black of Cape Rosier; a daughter, Karla Black and her husband, Joao Salomao, of Richmond; brothers and sisters, Geraldine Rackliff of Bucksport, Arnold Black and his wife, Jaska, of Holden, Edward Black and his wife, Anne, of Cape Rosier, Carol Allen and her friend, Richard Parsons, of Surry; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Cheryl Tardiff of Holden. He was predeceased by his father, Lewis Black in 1993. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until time of service. Interment will be Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Cape Rosier. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Ronald McDonald House of Bangor, Inc., 654 State St., Bangor, ME 04401-5649.
