JONESPORT – Alta M. Beal, 99, died Nov. 16, 2003, at a Jonesport healthcare facility. She was born Dec. 6, 1903, at Crawford, the daughter of Stanley and Laura (Fenlason) Jeffery. She was a graduate of Princeton High School, Class of 1924 and Washington State Normal School. In 1926 she married Austin H. Beal at St. Stephen, New Brunswick. They taught school one year in West Tremont before moving to Jonesport. For several years they lived at Lakeman’s Harbor during the lobster fishing season. Alta was very ingenious at making do with what they had, was an excellent homemaker, cook and seamstress. She was an active member of Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church having held most church offices. She was also active in her community. She was a lifetime member of Rumery Chapter No. 46 Order of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her husband, Austin; a son, George A. Beal and a grandson, Charles Bengtson, both lost at sea. She is survived by a daughter, Laura Estelle Bengtson of Wilmington, N.C., and a son, William Stanley Beal of Jonesport; daughter-in-law, Lavone Beal of Waldoboro; sister, Margaret Noyce of Waite; grandchildren, Timmy, Nathan, Craig and Merle Beal, Ivan, Lawrence, and Malcolm Beal, Lisa Laurion, Joel Bengtson and Susan Sumalski; many great-grandchildren; nieces, Mary Heald, Mona Harmon Bowman, Margaret Ann Harmon and Ruby Noyce; nephews, Jeffery Noyce, and Hubert Ripley Noyce. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, Jonesport with Pastor George Woodward officiating.
