TEMPLE, Texas – Professor Alvaro D. Diaz, 66, died Aug. 17, 2007. He was born Oct. 22, 1940, in Bogota, Colombia, the son of Alberto Diaz and Ana Copete. He held Bachelor of Science degrees in agronomy and animal sciences and a Master of Education degree in sciences from the University of Maine in Orono. He became a U.S. citizen in 1980, and lived in the Bangor area from 1963 to 1991. He was a passionate educator who taught math at Temple College, Texas, for 16 years, before which he taught Spanish at Bangor High School for 25 years. He also coached soccer at Bangor High School, worked as a shift supervisor at the Bangor International Airport for 12 years, and translated the book “Art Play” from English to Spanish for the Wolf Trap Institute in 1996. He was a modest, but brilliant man who was beloved by his family, friends and students, and was known for his patience and kindness. He is survived by wife, Amanda Diaz; daughter, Ana Olsthoorn and husband, Harley, of Iowa; daughter, Elisa Diaz of Bowdoinham; son, Carlos Diaz and wife, Teresa Swinbourne, of South Portland; brother, Dr. Jaime Diaz and wife, Ligia, of Texas; brother, Hector Diaz and wife, Susan, of Southwest Harbor; nephews and nieces, Belisa, Liliana, Rodrigo, Andres and Christopher; and grandchildren, Simon, Ivan, Oliver and Jonah.
