BELFAST – Andrew J. Gay, 76, Ophthalmologist, teacher, playwright, poet, passed away Jan. 18, 2004. A doctor with a passion for literature and visual arts, Andrew Gay was born and largely educated in Alabama. He was a Navy veteran. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Alabama in 1955, his career as a neuro-ophthalmologist, professor, and researcher took him to St. Louis, Mo., and Boston, Mass., before he settled permanently in Belfast, in 1971. He practiced there until he retired in 1991. A lifelong writer, he focussed on plays and poetry. His award-winning play, Caitlin, based on the widow of poet, Dylan Thomas, was shown on Maine Public Television. He produced two books of poetry, “Grey Light” in 1994, and “A Butterfly Careless”, in collaboration with artist Dudley Zopp in 2001. He left many loving friends and would have celebrated his 25th anniversary in March. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanine B. Gay of Belfast; and sister, Catherine L. Reilly of Lookout Mountain, Tenn. A memorial service will be held in the spring. NOW OLD MEN For Barney E. by Andrew Gay I accept you Now old men. Now we are brothers. There was a time We vied for the earth Together. A time when I was eager To prove my Separateness, Dwelling daily In my own accomplishments. Now we occupy the same feelings, Pool The same memories And realize the great value Of small talk.
