MARION, N.C., and ORRINGTON – Arlene Leighton Aubrey, 96, passed away Oct. 4, 2006, at a North Carolina hospital, after a brief period of ill health. After her marriage, she lived for more than 50 years in Orrington. In addition to raising her two children, she worked at various jobs in the area. She and Parker attended the East Orrington Congregational Church. In 1996, at age of 86, she moved to Marion, N.C., to live closer to her daughter. Arlene was an independent lady who lived on her own in her cozy apartment, until this past summer when her health began to fail. She was truly one of a kind, with a great sense of humor and a penchant for narrating poetry and telling jokes. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework, cooking and reading. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her only sibling, Wallace Leighton; and her grandson, Bret Calvert. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Kirtley Calvert of Old Fort, N.C.; her son and daughter-in-law, Byron E. and Jacquelyn Knight Aubrey of Kenduskeag; five granddaughters, Jennifer Gibb and her husband, John, of Old fort, N.C., Kendra Duley and her husband, John, of Town Hill, Annette Dow of Parsons, W.Va., Lesa Garib and her husband, Stephen, of Nashua, N.H., and Katherine Vanaria and her husband, Paul, of Newburgh; 10 great-grandchildren and three stepgranddaughters and their families. She will also be missed by her former daughter-in-law, Charlotte Vanscoy of Winchester, Va. A memorial service was held Oct. 6, in North Carolina. A committal service for her Maine family and friends will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Marston Cemetery, Snow’s Corner Road, Orrington, with the Rev. Robert Carlson officiating.
