MARS HILL – Arlene V. Fletcher, 83, wife of 49 years to the late John L. Fletcher, died peacefully Dec. 17, 2007, with her family by her side. She was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Millinocket, the oldest daughter of John and Cora (Wright) Cray. Arlene graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1942. She worked at J.J. Newberry Store, Mars Hill, for more than 15 years. Upon retiring she started doing craft shows which continued for 24 years. Many have enjoyed her crocheted handiwork and the hundreds of mittens that have warmed the hands of young and old alike. Arlene attended Mars Hill United Baptist Church for many years, working with Pioneer Girls and children’s churches. She was a devoted, loving mother and her pride and joy in life was her family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Ora Cray; and her son-in-law, John Hitchings. Surviving her is a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Nancy Fletcher of Mars Hill; a daughter, Claudia Hitchings of Caribou; two grandchildren, Andrea Bell and Martin Fletcher of Mars Hill; two great-grandchildren, Heather and Kennith Bell; two sisters, Mona Cain of Presque Isle and Maxine Roma of Alabama; three sisters-in-law, Zola Hill and Deede Fletcher of Mars Hill, and Bernadette Fletcher of Lee Summit, Mo. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Duncan Funeral Home, Main Street, Mars Hill, where funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. A reception will be held after the service at United Baptist Church, Mars Hill. A spring interment will be at Kings Grove Cemetery, Mars Hill.
