ARMY SGT. MAJ. DAVID DOUGHTY VILLA RICA, GA. – Sgt. Maj. David Harrison Doughty, 70, of Villa Rica, Ga., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica, Ga. Born on Nov. 23, 1933, in Bangor, he was the son of the late William Harrison Doughty and Jane Claire Crumwell Doughty and was the husband of the late Nancy Louise Kennedy Doughty. He had been a resident of Villa Rica for the past year, moving from Columbia, where he had lived for more than 20 years. He retired in 1976 from the U.S. Army, after 26 years of service. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Green Beret E-9 Special Forces. Sgt. Major Doughty served two tours in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the NCO Club of Ft. Jackson, S.C., the Bowling League of South Carolina and was a class instructor at Massachussetts Institute of Technology in Boston. He was an artist, master carpenter, avid outdoorsman, sportsman and loved fishing. Above all else, he was the most wonderful husband and father. Surviving are three daughters, Linda S. Crocker of Lugoff, S.C., Jean Rainwater of Villa Rica, Ga., and Sara L. Nichols of Elgin, S.C.; a son, Mike William Doughty of Mill Spring, N.C.; a sister, Marilyn Deriden of Stockton Springs; nine grand-children, three great-grandchild-ren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at noon, Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel, with U.S. Army Chaplain officiating. Interment, with full military honors, followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearer was the U.S. Army. The family received friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4-6 p.m. Sunday.
