JONESPORT – Arnold J. Stanhope Sr. known as “Arnie”, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at his home in West Jonesport. He was born Sept. 26, 1929, at Machias, the son of Gilbert J. and Lois (Johnson) Stanhope. Arnie was best known to his friends as a businessman, a lover of horses and an avid story teller. With his daughter, Terry Stanhope, he ran Stanhope’s Grocery in Jonesport for 37 years. Arnie was an active member of the Maine State Harness Racing Commission, training and racing his horses right up to the time of his death. Jonesporter’s and folks from across the country would visit his store to listen to Arnie tell stories and share his unique opinions on current events. His favorite saying was “Hey, Skinny”. Arnie was predeceased by his parents; one brother; one grandson; and his wife. He is survived by his five children, Arnold Jr. “Buddy”, Earl, Gayle, Terry and Helen. He leaves his brothers and sisters, Annie, Richie, Kate, Louise, Millard, Dale, Judy and Beverly. Arnie had five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a special friend and dancing partner, Lorraine Blyther and her family. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. A time of sharing and remembering Arnie’s life will follow the service at his Jonesport Diner. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the family, care of Gayle Hubbard, 491 Hudson Road, Glenburn, ME 04401 to be donated to the Maine State Harness Commission.
