DOVER-FOXCROFT – Arthur “Art” Enoch Engdahl Jr., 73, husband of Rebecca (Rowe) Engdahl, passed away Feb. 28, 2008, at his home, after a long battle with cancer. Art was born Aug. 5, 1934, in Boston, the eldest son of Arthur E. and Magna (Soronsen) Engdahl. He attended Boston public schools and Boston Latin School, graduating from Huntington School for Boys. He was a member of the Class of 1957 at Colby College, Waterville. Art served as an officer in the US. Air Force. In September 1957, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Jane “Becky” Rowe. Upon completion of a tour of active duty with the Air Force, he was employed by the Thomas & Betts Co., Elizabeth, N.J., as a territory sales rep and then in 1965, joined a good friend in the electrical manufacturer’s representative business and stayed with A.A. Macpherson Co., until his retirement in 1991. He then became part owner of Weatherbee’s Hardware, Dover-Foxcroft. Art always believed in community service and helping others. While in the electrical industry, he served as president of the New England Chapter NEMRA. He also served the town of Needham, Mass., as a member of the Exchange Club, town personnel board, assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 2, and other committees. He, along with his family, were active members of Covenant Congregational Church, Forest Hills, where he served on many committees and boards, including being chairman of the congregation for several four year terms and chaired its’ 100th Anniversary Celebration. After moving to Dover-Foxcroft, he became actively involved in the development of local efforts to bring more economic opportunities to the area. He served as founding president of Pine Crest Development Corporation and was instrumental in building and funding Pine Crest Business Park. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft and served as president 1995-1996. Art was also well known in the New England District of Kiwanis, where he held the offices of distinguished past lt. governor and district finance chair. He was also very active on the board of trustees for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, serving until his illness, as investment chair of its’ endowment funds. For his involvement in Kiwanis the local club presented Art with the coveted Kiwanis Tablet of Honor. He also holds the Morton Medal of Honor and a Hixon Medallion. Art leaves his loving wife of more than 50 years, Rebecca of Dover-Foxcroft; three children, Elizabeth A. Engdahl of Woodbridge, Ill., Arthur E. “Chuck” Engdahl III of Bellingham, Mass., and John E. Engdahl and his wife, Deborah, of Sutton, Mass.; four grandchildren, who were the pride of his life, Kristina Black of Woodbridge, Ill., and Amanda, Patrick and Shawn Engdahl of Bellingham, Mass.; two special girls, Pamela and Amy Kirby of Bellingham, Mass.; a brother, Roger Engdahl and his wife, Carol, of Centerville, Mass.; several cousins and many friends. Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 3, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, with the Rev. Heather Kurtz officiating.
