ALLAGASH – Arthur L. Kelley, 89, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at a Fort Kent healthcare facility with his wife, Edith, at his side. He was born Aug. 18, 1916, in St. Francis, the son of Charles and Stella (Sirois) Kelly. He graduated from Fort Kent Normal School and received a masters of education from the University of Maine. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II participating in the invasion of Normandy. After the war, he devoted his life to family and education. He was a schoolteacher, principal, education officer at Loring Air Force Base and just before retirement, the school superintendent of Allagash. He spent his retirement years enjoying the woods and waters of Allagash, telling stories with love and humor of the people who make up the rich history of the area. He is survived by his wife, Edith (McBreairty) Kelley of Allagash; son, Karl Kelley and wife, Sylvia, of Falmouth and their son, Jon of Fort Kent; son, Dana Kelley and wife, Judy, their children, Sara, Anne and Ryan, all of New Milford, Conn. Arthur is also survived by four brothers and one twin sister, Gerald Kelly and his wife, Nora, of St. Francis, Jean Farrell and her husband, Tom, of Briar Cliff Manor, N.Y., Roger Kelley and his wife, Beth, of Mattapoisett, Mass., James Kelley and his wife, Patsy, of Glastonbury, Conn., Paul Kelly and wife, Joyce, of Fort Kent; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by four sisters, Della Parks, Julie Burnett, Eileen Thompson and Theresa Davies; and five brothers, Wilfred (Manny) Kelly, John Kelly, George Kelly, Earl Kelley and Charles Kelley. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Daigle & Nadeau Funeral, Fort Kent. Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday with full military honors at the Allagash Baptist Church, Allagash, with the Rev. John Dik officiating. Spring burial will be held May 12, in the Allagash Baptist Cemetery.
