PORTLAND – Arthur Richard Compton, 61, of Boothbay, formerly of East Wilton, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, as the result of injuries sustained in an accidental fall. He was born Sept. 19, 1942, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, a son of Arthur Stanley and Ella (Huff) Compton. Arthur was a true entrepreneur, having started as a bagboy at the First National Grocery Store in Farmington, rising to meat cutter and eventually working into a management position. In 1970, he purchased a grocery store in Rangeley, and expanded the business to include seven other IGA Grocery Stores in Farmington, Pittsfield, Bangor, Camden, Rockland, Yarmouth and Livermore Falls. He also owned several other commercial rental properties. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the Maine Lodge No. 20 AF & AM and the Kora Temple Shrine. He was a devoted and generous supporter of animal rights and welfare. He enjoyed boating, playing cards, travelling and caring for his dogs, Molly and Rusty and cat, Texas. He is survived by two daughters, Beth Ann Compton of Brunswick, and Mary Ella Compton and her fianc_, Roger Paradis, of Framingham, Mass. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan Putnam Compton, who died in 1996; and three siblings, Elaine Compton, Henry Compton and Bette Nusman. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service and Bereavement Resource Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd. (Rtes. 2 & 27) Farmington, with Rev. Timothy Walmer of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Wilton, officiating. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening Burial at Fairview Cemetery, Farmington. Following committal services, all are welcome to attend a family reception at The Village Inn, Rte. 27, Belgrade Lakes.
