NEWPORT, N.H. – Avis Lois (Brown), 91, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at the New London Hospital after a brief illness. Born Dec. 27, 1913, in Smyrna, the daughter of Herbert James Brown and Molly Laura McIver. She lived in Smyrna and East Corinth, attended Houlton Junior High and graduated from the East Corinth Academy. During her teenage years, she and her sister Lottie sang in Bangor, on Radio Stations WLBZ & WABI, as well as many theatres, boat and auto shows, and other functions throughout the state of Maine. Avis lived in Newport, N.H. for 65 years and was self-employed as the owner of the Harbor Grill restaurant on Lake Sunapee for one season, she worked at Dorr Woolen Mill as the receptionist for nine years, and then became self-employed owning Scott Realty from 1962-1998. She was past matron of Aurora OES 31, Newport, N.H., as well as a charter founder of the Chapter of Rainbow Girls on Newport. past noble grand of Hopeful Rebekah Lodge No. 33 in Newport, N.H., past president of WSCS Methodist Church, Newport, N.H.; past president of Women’s Republican Club of Newport, N.H. Avis lived her life surrounded by flowers, birds and other animals that visited the farm. She was an avid Red Sox fan for more than 40 years. She enjoyed fishing and hunting with her family. She was on several bowling leagues, both ten pin and candle pin, in Newport, and Claremont, winning many state championships. Reading, crossword puzzles, and games of cards were her form of relaxation. She was known to her family and friends for playing the piano and singing along with family members. She was also known for her hospitality, welcoming everyone into the farm at any time. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jesse W. Scott, of Bradford Road, Newport, N.H.; two daughters, Molly (Scott) O’Brien of North Sutton, N.H., and Maxine (Scott) Houle of Westmoreland, N.H.; one stepson, Richard J. Scott, of Pittsburg, N.H.; one sister, Lottie Huff, of Sunapee, N.H.; five grandchildren and five great-grand-children, Christopher R. Lemay and his two sons, Michael and Jacob of New London, N.H., Eric and Kym Lemay of Lempster, N.H., Laree Ann Townsend of Lempster, N.H., Jesse A. Antosiewicz of Barrington, N.H., and his son, Calvin and daughter, Josephine and Daniel J. Antosiewicz of Keene, N.H., and his son Bradyn, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the United Methodist Church in Newport, N.H. followed by the burial at Eastman Cemetery on North Road in Sunapee, N.H. There will be a reception at the Methodist Church rectory following the burial. There will be no visiting hours.
