SAN ANTONIO – Avis R. Kilbride, 79, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Jan. 8, 2008, after an auto accident. Avis was born in Old Town, to George and Margaret Chamberlain. She graduated from Old Town High School and Maine General School of Nursing, Portland. Her husband of 53 years, Bernard, survived her until his passing, May 26, 2008, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Avis and Bernard lived in South Bend, Ind., for 21 years, where Bernard was a professor at the University of Notre Dame and Avis was an active member of the Ladies of Notre Dame. In 1985, they moved to San Antonio, where Bernard was the CFO for the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. After retiring in 1994, they spent much of their time traveling, visiting grandchildren and spending summers in Bar Harbor. Surviving them are five children, Bernard Jr. and wife, Shelby, Sean, Sioban and husband, Larry, Darach and wife, Pearl, and Liam and wife, Kim; as well as 10 grandchildren. Avis is also survived by her sister, Alice McGowan and her husband, Bill. A Mass for both Avis and Bernard will be said 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Holy Family Parish Church, Old Town. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, after which the family will meet friends and relatives for refreshments at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
