WILSONVILLE, Ore. – Barbara Elisabeth Fenderson Smith, died peacefully with her children at her side April 27, 2004. She was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Mars Hill, the daughter of George Richard Fenderson and Henrietta Jessie (Thistle) Fenderson. Barbara attended Mars Hill schools and went on to further her education at Bradford Junior College and Katherine Gibbs in Boston. She worked during World War II as a secretary for the Air Force at Presque Isle Airbase. She married Bernard R. Smith in 1942 and they began a potato farming business in Bridgewater. He predeceased her in 1983. Later in life, she became an LPN and went on to obtain an associates degree at the University of Maine in Presque Isle and received her RN license. She worked for many years near her home at the Mars Hill Hospital. Barbara was very active in her community, and was a lifelong member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. She had a special passion for nature and helping others. She enjoyed spending time at her small cabin in Mars Hill, caring for her surroundings with her gentle nature and spirituality. She was also especially fond of time spent with her close friends for weekly coffee. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, William Eldon Fenderson and Aubrey Richard Fenderson. She is survived by her children, Judith, Jane, Barbara and Bernard “Beaver” of Arizona, Colorado and Oregon. Her grandchildren, Judy Ann, Steven, Bruce, Wolfgang, Heather, Melissa, Matthew, Aaron, Abram, Meghan, Morgan, Parker and Jessica will miss her very much. A memorial service and celebration of life will be announced at a later date in the summer.
