BELFAST – Barbara M. Brown, 85, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at a local healthcare facility, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Branford, Conn., the daughter of Moses and Luella (Nicklin) Floyd. She lived in Connecticut for many years until the death of her first husband, Leonard Joseph Lipton. Barbara worked as a legal secretary in Washington, D.C., then for Eaton, Glass and Marsano in Belfast and Stanley Brown. Barbara had a passion for books, and gave the love of reading to all of her family. She spent much time and love creating “book boxes” for her children and grandchildren at Christmastime, filled with books that would interest them — a tradition that will be carried on by her family in her memory. Barbara’s love of books led her to operate a mail order book business for 20 years, and she was her happiest helping customers select reading material at her family’s shop at the Hobby Horse Flea Market. She also provided a wonderful and stable home for several cats over the years. She was also active in the Eastern Star, and took great pride in being the wife of a Mason who had attained the honor of the 33rd Degree. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was also predeceased by her sister, Mildred Murray and brother, Henry Floyd. Barbara is survived by her husband of 42 years Charles Brown; two children, Lennie Mullen of Augusta, and Debbi Lipton-Morin and her husband, Raymond, of Westbrook; six grandchildren, John, Amy and Scott Mullen, Joseph Moody, Kevin Himes, and Jennifer Hartwell; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Danny; and many other loved ones. Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 27, at the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Court Street, Belfast. Private burial will take place in Freedom, New Hampshire. Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to the Friends of the Belfast Public Library, 106 High St., Belfast, ME 04915.
