STOCKTON SPRINGS – Belva M. Gray, 95, beloved grandmother and matriarch of her family passed away in her home of 58 years on Feb. 9, in the year of our Lord 2004, after bravely battling a long illness. She was to have been 96 on Friday. She was born Feb. 13, 1908, in Orland, the daughter of Edwin and Laura (Bowden) Gray. She traveled across the river to Stockton Springs at the age of nine so her mother and sisters could work in the sardine factory. She has ever since been a proud resident of Cape Jellison. Known by her family as a classy lady, she only began wearing slacks at the age of 93. An excellent cook and impeccable housekeeper, she passed on traditions and talents to her family that is too often lost in our times. “Mam,” as her family knew her, was an avid dancer and entertained her family with wonderful stories of attending the dances at Sandy Point Community Hall. She was a member of Sandy Point Congregational Church. She was a friend of many. Above all, she was known by her family as a person who gave unconditional love. She was predeceased by her daughter, Yvonne G. McLaughlin; and her sisters, Etta Patterson and Nellie Shute. She is survived by her son-in-law, Jack McLaughlin Sr. and wife, Kathleen, of Stockton Springs; granddaughter, Laverne Davis and husband, Jefferson, of Stockton Springs; grandsons, Jack McLaughlin Jr. of Evanston, Ill., and Gary McLaughlin of Bangor; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four nephews; numerous cousins; her beloved friend, Margarette Fernald of Searsport; and her little dog, Dee Dee. At her request there will be a graveside service in the spring for family and friends.
