SOMERVILLE, Ala. – Bennie E. Pope, 75, died Jan. 2, 2007. Bennie was born June 1, 1931, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He served in the Korean War and was retired as a radar engineer from the U.S. Army Missile Command. During his career, Mr. Pope was a key contributor to the development and successful fielding of the patriot air defense system. Mr. Pope was predeceased by his son, Larry Eugene Pope; and his son-in-law, Calvin Wyman. Survivors include his wonderful wife of 54 years, Virginia; brothers, James, Thomas and William Pope; son, Michael and his wife, Andrea, of Huntsville, Ala.; daughters, Teresa Berger and her husband, Mitch, of Atlanta, and Janice Wyman of Parkman, Lori Poehner of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Brooke Pope, Le, Matt and Benji Pope, Brandon and Wesley Pope, Justin, Nathaniel and Grayson Berger and Alanna and Jocelyn Wyman; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Hayden Nee. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Burningtree Memorial Gardens. A private family viewing will be held Friday evening. Per the family’s request, friends are welcome to come by 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at the Holland Memorial Chapel to sign the register book.
