HAMPDEN and ORRINGTON Bernadette Mary (Martin) Batey, 90, wife of the late Kenneth W. Batey, went home to be with the Lord, Dec. 28, 2005, at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Fort Kent, the daughter of Joseph Martin and Josephine (Voisine) Martin. Having lived in Hampden for 57 years, she was well known as the lady who lived on the corner with the beautiful flowers and also as the woman in white who walked with her two little dogs. She loved to exercise, tend her beautiful garden, clean her house and share her unique views with anyone who would listen. Many who listened found her views fascinating and were amazed to find that she only had five years of education. Her abundant energy to work and create was admired by all who knew her and her memory will last in Hampden for years to come. She was predeceased by her husband, who owned Batey’s Pine Tree Market in 1965; by her daughter, Lucrecia May (Batey) Schiraga in 1987; brothers, Leonard, Percy, and Clovis Martin; and by sisters, Eva Babin, Yvonne Long, and Pricilla Kelley. She is survived by one sister, Regina (Martin) Arsenault of Madison; her daughter, Victoria Doucette and husband, Stephen, of Bucksport; five grandchildren, Jeremy Bean of Bangor, Terri Plensky of Bellvue, Wash., Kenneth Edwards of Auburn, Calif., Stephanie Doucette of Fairfax, Va., and Erin Brown of Haughton, La.; and eight great-grandchildren. She had a long lasting loving relationship with Kevin Bean and family of Brewer and his brother, Terry Bean and family of Hampden. Several nieces and nephews with special mention to Ricky and Retta Kelley of Hampden, Gloria Alley of Fairfield and Diane Gallant of Madison. Many friends include Irene Doucette, Carol Turner, Chris Shaw, Bev McClusky, Gerry Pellitier, Ginger Penny, Mikki Melanson, and the staff of Schacts True Value, Hampden Hardware, and Hampden Health Food Store. She was one of the oldest members of the Bucksport Curves and was loved and admired by the staff and members. Those who lovingly cared for her during her illness will remember her beautiful smile and hand reaching out to greet them. Berna will be remembered by her special friend, Sybil Norris of Orrington, who demonstrated the love and compassion of the Lord to her. At the time of her death Barna knew that when God looked at her he saw: A woman who is beautifully perfect and perfectly beautiful…a survivor whose strength has led her through adversity…a kind and generous spirit who made the world a gentler place…a reflection of his own love and light. She peacefully followed his light and went home. Donations in her memory can be made to Manna’s Derek House, P.O. Box 2763, Bangor, ME 04402. A special memorial service will be held in late spring when the flowers she helped plant are in bloom. Anyone wishing to attend should call her daughter, Vicky Doucette, for further details.
