TRENTON – Bernard “Bernie” Frederick Matthews, 85, died July 15, 2005, at an Ellsworth hosp-ital. He was born in Sommerville, Mass., the son of M. Frederick and Mary A. (Levell) Matthews. Bernie was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He later worked in Massachusetts for the Boston and Maine Railroad Company and as a commercial truck driver. He loved animals especially his own cat and dog. He is survived by his wife Sheila (Stanley) Matthews; two sons, Gene Matthews, of Trenton and Bernard Matthews, of Quincy, Mass.; a brother, Eugene Matthews and wife, Margo, of Woburn, Mass.; a sister, Mary McKenna and a sister-in-law, Peggy Matthews, both of Massachusetts; several grandchildren including, Melissa Matthews, of Southwest Harbor; and many nieces and nephews. Bernie was predeceased by a brother, Frederick; and two sisters, Alice McKenna and Margaret Matthews. Friends are invited to call 5:30-7 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, July 22, with Father Scott Mower, presiding. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. A reception will follow the interment at Jordan-Fernald.
