CARMEL – Bertha Ellen (Bickford) Bryant passed away peacefully Dec. 31, 2003, in Bangor. Bertha was born Dec. 3, 1922, daughter of Ulysses S. Bickford and Sadie Ellen Loring of Newburgh. In her childhood, she was raised by her uncle, Stihlman Brown Loring and his wife, Maud O. Williams, of Carmel. Bertha married Beverly R. Bryant on Dec. 3, 1942, living in Stetson. After the death of her husband on July 12, 1984, Bertha lived at Carmel village with her sister, Lillian Theda Loring, who died Feb. 20, 1995. Bertha continued to live alone at Carmel village until three years ago when she became a resident of the Stillwater Health Care Facility in Bangor. Bertha attended Carmel High School, Carmel Union Church, was a member of Carmel Senior Citizens, a member of Carmel/Etna Extension and was a life member of John R. Chase Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Carmel, Star in the East Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star at Hampden. She is survived by brothers, James Bickford of Ellsworth and Sheldon Bickford of Etna; a sister, Helen Swett of Carmel; several nieces and nephews. Donations in Bertha’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Carmel Union Church, or Carmel Senior Citizens. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
